What makes Operations Transformative?

Changing format for fun because I was asked the above question and didn’t have an immediate answer. Rather than think through a formal reply, I came here for a “Dear Diary” moment to write out my thoughts. Here is the thing with what I do, I look for small changes that align with a companies vision and tweak it in little ways that compound over time. In my brain, making operations tidy is saving a few dollars a day in a high yield savings account. Day one, maybe you make two dollars. But your two dollars today is three tomorrow and suddenly the train is flying down the tracks. But, before we send that train flying I work with the owner and teams to make sure we have company buy in.

Putting this back into my normal format:

Leading operational transformation without compromising people and culture starts with remembering that operations are really about people. Processes, systems, and structures only work if the people inside them feel supported and aligned.

For me, transformation begins with listening—getting feedback from the team on what’s working and what’s creating friction. That way, when we introduce or refine tools, workflows,  accountability measures, people see them as solutions to their own pain points rather than imposed changes.

The second piece is transparency. If the 'why' behind a change isn’t clear, culture erodes. But when people understand how the transformation ties to growth, sustainability, or even their own career paths, they’re far more invested. I was definitely the annoying kid who asked teachers “but why” over and over.

And finally, I think balance is key. It’s not about chasing efficiency at the expense of humanity. It’s about designing systems that free people up to do their best work—less busywork, more value creation. When operations serve the people, not the other way around, that’s when you get transformation that sticks and a culture that strengthens through the process. Transformation is a big word, but when you move the needle in a hundred little ways it adds up.
